Reception stage decoration ideas: six real setups and how to choose yours

The reception stage is where the couple spends three or four hours being photographed with every relative, colleague and neighbour. Every one of those photos will have the stage behind it. So it is worth choosing carefully.

Rather than mood-board ideas from abroad, here are six setups our decor team has actually built in the Vicky Gardens banquet hall, with what each one suits.

1. Emerald velvet with white florals

Emerald velvet backdrop with white and green floral clusters and chandeliers

Deep green velvet drapes, white and blush flowers clustered at the top and sides, crystal chandeliers and a carved ivory sofa. It feels rich without being loud, and it flatters almost every outfit colour, especially red, gold and pastel lehengas.

Suits: winter receptions, couples who want something regal but not the usual red.

2. Classic red and gold

Red reception stage with roses, gold frames and chandeliers

The Bengali reception look most families grew up with. Red drapes, red and white roses, gold accents, chandeliers. It is warm, festive and instantly recognisable.

Suits: traditional families and Bou Bhaat receptions. Watch out: if the bride is in red Benarasi, add more white flowers so she stands out from the backdrop.

3. Soft peach drapes and chandeliers

Peach-draped reception stage with chandeliers and floral stands

Layered peach and champagne drapes, warm lighting, chandeliers and tall floral stands. It glows on camera and makes skin tones look lovely, which photographers appreciate.

Suits: pastel outfits, couples who want a romantic, airy feel.

4. Floral ring

Teal backdrop with a large white and orange floral ring and candle stands

A large circular floral frame behind the couple, set against a dark teal backdrop with tall candle stands. The ring naturally frames the couple in every photo, which makes the photographer's job much easier.

Suits: modern couples, Instagram-heavy guest lists, smaller stages where you want impact without clutter.

5. Pampas and gold

Reception stage with pampas grass, dried florals and gold stands

Pampas grass, dried florals and gold geometric stands against a patterned wall. A boho, slightly unexpected look that photographs beautifully in warm light.

Suits: couples who want something different from the classic stage and like earthy tones.

6. Single throne with a floral ring

Single carved throne chair inside a red, white and yellow floral ring

One carved chair inside a dense floral ring of red, white and yellow roses, with warm string lights behind. Striking for a bride's solo portraits and also works beautifully for Annaprashan and birthday photos.

How to choose yours

  • Start with the outfit. Contrast, do not match. A bride in red on a red stage disappears in photos.
  • Think about the camera. Most of your guests will see the stage only once; your album will show it for decades.
  • Plan the lighting with the decor. Warm front light on faces, softer light behind. Avoid strong pink or purple directly on the couple.
  • Leave room on the stage. Families come up ten at a time. A stage too crowded with props leaves nowhere to stand.
  • Keep the sofa comfortable. You will sit on it for hours.

All six of these were designed for the same hall, which shows how much the look can change with the right team. See more in our gallery, read about our in-house decor, or plan the earlier rituals with our Gaye Holud decoration ideas.

Common questions

How do I choose a reception stage colour?

Start from the bride's reception outfit and pick a stage colour that contrasts with it rather than matching it, so she does not disappear into the backdrop in photos. Then choose flowers and lighting to support that palette.

Real flowers or artificial flowers for a reception stage?

Real flowers look and smell better up close but cost more and wilt under heat and lights. Good artificial flowers, mixed with some fresh blooms at eye level, are a practical middle path for long evening receptions.

What lighting works best for reception stage photos?

Warm, even front lighting on the couple, with softer backlighting and chandeliers for depth. Avoid strong coloured washes directly on faces, which make skin tones look odd in photos.
